The City of Angels is home to several attractions including the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County.
It's the largest natural and historical museum in the Western region of the United States, and its impressive collection covers 4.5 billion years of history.
As you explore, you will see a variety of exhibits such as:
Age of Mammals - According to the museum's website, Age of Mammals is the first permanent museum exhibit to trace mammal evolution - from the extinction of large dinosaurs to the rise of humans. On display are 240 specimens, including a zebra, alpaca, and sprinting cheetah.
Gem and Mineral Hall - This gallery features 2,000 gems and minerals from around the globe. One of the most valuable specimens in the exhibit is a slab of quality jadeite that weighs several hundred pounds. Other highlights include spessartine garnet, benitoite, and elbaite tourmaline.
Ralph W. Schreiber Hall of Birds - The Hall of Birds answers an array of questions, including how bird flight works, where a bird's knee bends, and how many types of nests there are. It features more than four hundred species local to southern California, including condors and black-hooded parakeets.
African Mammal Hall - In the African Mammal Hall, visitors can study in detail dozens of fascinating creatures. Its dioramas are some of the best in the world, and they recreate the natural environments in which the animals were discovered at the start of the 20th century. The display includes spotted hyenas, savanna elephants, and okapis.
