Step off of the concrete and into the sand (dune) at Manhattan Beach's popular Sand Dune Park. Sand Dune Park, as you might have guessed, is aptly named for its great 100-foot sand dune. But a giant sand dune isn't the only thing you'll find there - the three-acre park also features a fenced playground for children, a shaded picnic area, and walking paths throughout.
A path to the top of the dune means a view of the city, while other trails around the park offer a look at the plant and bird life, including one species of plant which is quite rare. Orcutt's yellow pincushion, an annual herb with a bright yellow flower, is found in Sand Dune Park and are endemic to the coastal dunes of California.
Sand Dune Park also has a reputation as a popular workout spot, not surprising considering there is hardly a better workout than sprinting up a long 45-degree hill of sand. Professional and amateur athletes have used this sandy slope to train, and Sand Dune Park has been featured in several fitness magazines and local papers promoting its tush-firming potential.
If you're not into running up a giant hill of sand in the Southern California heat that's ok - sand dune park truly has something for everyone. Enjoy a picnic in the shade, bring your child to enjoy the merry-go-round or swings in the playground, or take a stroll with your (leashed) dog along the various paths. The perfect day trip for families with children or teens, adults, and the young at heart, Sand Dune Park is waiting for your visit.
