If you love comedy, or just need some laughs, check out the shows at The Groundlings Theater and School. The Groundlings was founded in 1972 to be (as its name says) a school for aspiring performers and a training ground for improvisational comedy. Its veterans include Will Ferrell, Kristen Wiig, Conan O’Brien, and Kathy Griffith, as well as many performers that went on to Saturday Night Live and Mad TV.
Its illustrious veterans are an indication of how good the improv comedy is here, and there is a lot of it, with performances nearly every night. On Wednesday nights, for example, the troupe performs in The Crazy Uncle Joe Show. They begin with three suggestions from the crowd, and then proceed to create situations from the suggestions. On Sundays, experienced comedians from the school present comedic sketches in Thank Goodness It’s Sunday.
The Groundlings will be presenting a number of holiday shows, including a holiday musical show. There will also be a holiday show on New Year’s Eve with specialty-themed cocktails and a taco bar!
One of the riches at The Groundlings theater is a rotating number of one-person acts and plays interspersed among the improvs and the sketches. You can see a one-person show in Growing Up Game Show, a look back at childhood. Fairy Tale Theater is a look at adult-themed new fairy tales and mixes live actors and puppets.
If you miss the holidays, Taboo Tales, a story-telling show, will play in late January. You can arrive early and submit your own taboo!
