With over 280 sunny days out of 365, Los Angeles invites sunshine lovers to enjoy the outdoors all year - and not just at the beach! Whether you want to soak up some Vitamin D on a leisurely stroll or sweat under plentiful rays with a strenuous workout, these outdoor Manhattan Beach destinations are sure to brighten your day.

  1. The Strand

The Strand is a highly walkable promenade that unfurls alongside miles of idyllic beachfront running south from El Porto Beach through Hermosa Beach. In the nearly 2 mile stretch from Manhattan Beach pier to Hermosa Beach pier, one can admire the ocean views while strolling or jogging on a flat surface conveniently separated from a designated bike path. If the sea breeze happens to stir up a spirit of invigoration, stop at one of many workout stations. But regardless of your level of exertion while on The Strand, be sure to enjoy bountiful eateries for refreshments along the way - it is vacation, after all!

Access The Strand from the Sea View Inn by walking four blocks west on 34th Street.

  1. Veterans Parkway

Veterans Parkway also connects Manhattan Beach to Hermosa Beach, but it strays from the water, running through the center of each town via 3.5 miles of flat, wood chip covered trail. Flanked by lush greenery, the Parkway features tree-shaded resting areas every quarter mile, complete with benches and water fountains.

Access the Veterans Parkway trailhead in Manhattan Beach beneath the N Sepulveda Blvd overpass located just south of Rosecrans Ave between Valley Dr and N Ardmore Ave, behind the Manhattan Village Parking lot.

  1. Sand Dune Park

If you're feeling the need for some serious cardio, then summiting a 100-foot mountain of sand should surely suffice! And, given the Southern California coastal weather, walking (or sprinting!) up Manhattan Beach's formidable Sand Dune is much preferable to doing something similar in, say, the desert? At least that's one way to rationalize it if you're looking for some motivation! However, a serpentine nature trail offers a less arduous means to the view at the top. You could also opt to live vicariously through a fellow vacationer's breathless account of achievement while relaxing at the picnic area or hanging out with the kids at the fenced playground (we totally agree, these ARE perfectly reasonable vacation activities).

*Please note that entrance to the park requires an online reservation in addition to $1 cash paid at the gate. To access the Sand Dune Reservation system, and for hours and further information (such as how to go Bird Watching around the dune!), visit the Sand Dune Park page on the City of Manhattan Beach website.

For information on the city during your stay, visit the City of Manhattan Beach homepage.
