Spending the Christmas/Hanukah/New Year's holidays in southern California? We'll spare you the jokes about singing White Christmas. Although Southern California is a great place to sing Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, songs about dreidels, and Auld Lange Syne, there are a number of wonderful holiday events that can't be found anywhere else.
Here are our top suggestions for things to see and do.
1. The Nutcracker
The Nutcracker is a classic Christmas-themed ballet. For 35 years, the Long Beach Ballet has been giving a world-class production, and this year is no exception -- it will be the 36th. It's a sumptuous version that will delight all ages.
2. Christmas and New Year's Aboard the Queen Mary
The Queen Mary, of course, is the vintage cruise ship docked in southern California. You can see it during any vacation, but the holiday experience is in a class by itself.
Queen Mary Christmas is a special event that runs throughout the holiday season, starting after Thanksgiving. The ship will be decorated with lights, special foods, and even a captain who looks very like...the old gent we call Santa. They'll be music and special activities. Plus, as with any Queen Mary visit, you can revisit the state rooms, dining rooms, and walkways of an earlier, grander time.
Not to be outdone, there is also a New Year's Eve celebration aboard the Queen Mary. Champagne, toasts, music, and dining -- what more could you want on December 31?
3. Sing-Alongs with the Los Angeles Philharmonic
Not only is the Los Angeles Philharmonic one of the nation's premier classical orchestras, it does cool stuff beyond belief around the holidays. On December 22 and 23, it hosts not one but two sing-alongs: two are themed generally for the holiday, and two are White Christmas sing-alongs. (Told you we wouldn't be joking about White Christmas.) If you miss these, the sophisticated group Pink Martini will be ringing in 2019 with the Phil.
