If you've never been able to check out a bodysurfing contest now is your chance! Gillis Beach Bodysurfing Association is sponsoring the International Bodysurfing Championship on August 5th. The contest is part of this year's 56th International Surf Festival being held at Manhattan Beach. Look for the first heat of bodysurfing to start at 6:45 am on the north side of the Manhattan Beach Pier.
With 8 different men's and women's divisions, it's sure to be an exciting competition. This year they are even introducing the Legend division for the first time which is exclusively for surfers over 63 years of age. Spectators will be able to check out lots of surfing action from the very novice participants all the way up to former champions of bodysurfing.
Want to get in on the action? Registration is now open through July 31st for a $25 fee that includes a free t-shirt for each participant. Sign in starts at 6:15amand heats are determined by age and gender. If there is still space available after the deadline participants may sign up with a $35 late fee. You can head on over to the ISF website to register and get more information.
Bodysurfing competitions are based on maneuvering, tricks, and technique. There are often awards given for unique categories such as Best Wave or Best Wipeout; however, bodysurfing can be a highly competitive sport. At the ISF there is no special equipment allowed and participants can use swim fins only.
