Known for its picturesque vistas and for being rich with history, Bruce's Beach is the oldest park in Manhattan Beach. When you arrive at the top of this grassy hillside, you'll understand why the three-acre site is considered one of the most beautiful in the area.
Bruce's Beach will leave you wanting for nothing. At the top of the park, you can relax on park benches under shade trees while enjoying the sweeping view. At the west end of the park is an on-leash dog park where you can take your best furry friend for an afternoon romp while both of you make new friends. If you want some exercise, there's a basketball half-court in the middle of the park, and of course photography buffs will find endless photo opportunities.
Bruce's Beach was actually established as a resort in 1912 by African Americans Charles and Willa Bruce. They purchased part of the present-day parkland and three additional lots of land, building a resort open to black guests. Given that segregation was in full swing at the time, this was a rare opportunity for people of color to visit the seaside.
In the same year, George H. Peck was buying land in the same area, but he didn't agree with segregationist views. He offered lots of his land to African American families, who built their own seaside homes near the Bruces' resort, and a new community was formed. This was the foundation of Manhattan Beach's philosophy of "friendship, goodwill and respect for all."
