It is often said that Los Angeles is the "City of The Image." After all, the film industry grew up here, and came to dominate the world. The twentieth and twenty-first centuries are both defined by an explosion of images: on the Web, on movie and television screens, and in the cameras and phones of photographers both professional and amateur. That’s why the Annenberg Space for Photography is one of the great attractions and one of the most intriguing museums in the Los Angeles area. (Also, unbelievably, it’s the only museum dedicated to photography in the area.)

Within photography, the range is wide. The Annenberg Space for Photography covers both digital and print photography and its collections are comprised of both world-famous and emerging artists.

Right now and through February, for example, the Annenberg Space will be presenting an exhibit entitled “Identity.” The exhibit consists of all the portraits from photographer Timothy Greenfield Sanders’s “list” documentaries, which have run on PBS. The films — The Black List, The Latino List, The Women’s List, The Out List and The Trans List — chart the political and cultural progress of each previously marginalized group, as do the portraits.

The exhibit marks the first time that all the portraits can be seen in one place.

The Annenberg Center for photography also hosts frequent lectures. This fall and winter they will focus on the theme of diversity, in keeping with the theme of the exhibition.
